The BMW M3 was born in 1986 not as a flagship but as a homologation special: BMW needed to race a 3 Series in Group A touring cars, so it built a road car to qualify. That race-bred origin is why every M3 has punched above its weight.

Generations and evolution

E30 (1986–1991)

The original: a high-revving four-cylinder, flared arches, and a subtle rear wing. The Evolution and Sport Evolution models are the most collected M cars of any era.

E36 (1992–1999)

A smoother, more refined coupe with a straight-six. The M3 Lightweight and the European SMG cars broadened the appeal.

E46 (2000–2006)

Often called the best-handling M3, with the 333 hp S54 six and the rare CSL with a carbon roof and thinner glass.

E90 / E92 / E93 (2007–2013)

The only V8 M3, available as sedan, coupe, and convertible — the last naturally aspirated M3.

F80 (2014–2018)

The first turbo M3 (a 3.0-litre twin-turbo six) and sedan-only, paired with the M4 coupe.

G80 (2021–present)

The current M3, with the controversial large grille, the S58 engine, and the first M3 Touring estate.

Design language and the silhouette

The M3's silhouette is a 3 Series with intent: wider front wings, a power dome in the bonnet, and quad exhausts at the back. The E30's boxy arches and the G80's oversized grille give each generation a tell, but the cabin-over-axle balance is constant. Because we cut every Tinvibe piece from 2 mm steel to the car's true outline, the traits that make the BMW M3 recognizable — its roofline, stance and key details — are exactly what the metal keeps, in matte black powder coat across five sizes from 50 cm to 140 cm.

Production, sales and availability

BMW has built well over 100,000 M3s across all generations; the brand does not publish a single cumulative total, and per-year figures vary by market. The E30 M3 is the rarest, with roughly 18,000 built worldwide.

The M3 in the Tinvibe collection

We cut the BMW M3 as a laser-cut steel silhouette in five sizes from 50 cm to 140 cm, finished in matte black powder coat. The designs below are drawn from our catalogue for this nameplate.
